2 - Brighton - Work Diary
Evaluation
Following on from the previous shoot, I decided to venture towards journeying out into different places around Britain. As I had just taken images from inside the forest, I decided I then wanted to venture to a different location and photograph the surrounding sites. When looking at different coastal areas, I decided that Brighton would be the best place for this shoot. The reason I chose to shoot in Brighton was because I had not been there before, and because of this everything was unfamiliar to me. As a result of this, I was able to grasp a new sense of creativity and photograph things which I hadn't taken before. There was a lot of landmarks in Brighton, such as the Pier and also the Pavilion. When we first arrived at Brighton, I decided to take images of everything that I could. I did this as I had already been on my Journey, and in my work I would be able to compare different parts of England and the ways of life in these areas. I took pictures inside the Pier, were I was able to experiment with the camera settings to get the warm glow of the arcades which I had previously seen in work from an American retro artist. As a result of this, I managed to take one of my favourite images from this shoot.
This above image was my favourite from the shoot due to the colours that came out of editing. When I placed the image into Photoshop, I was able to enhance the vibrance of the colours and also alter the exposure to make it darker. This resulted in the image being quite dark, but the vibrant bold colours striking the spectator. It also stands out among the dark background, and does conform to work which I had studied before and is often found in Journey work through the exploration of America. In the arcade, I had my camera settings as the following to ensure the images were not too dark to edit. I had the exposure on a shutter speed of 1/60, meaning I had to keep still to ensure the image was in focus. I also had an f/3.5 and an ISO 450.
Progression
As I have now developed my work from the Journey topic, I will be going on a journey myself in the next week as I am travelling to Rome. On my week away, I aim to be taking images of the different styles of architecture, exploring with a range of different techniques such as Panoramas and also looking at the changing ways the city can be photographed in both the day and at night. I have never visited Italy before, and therefore I feel as though it will influence me too take images of the city in a new light away from my previous years work which was heavily photographed in the South East of England.

1 - Epping Forest - Work Diary
Evaluation
After studying the photographers in both the research log and separately in my photographer research. I was able to see the ways in which I could start the Journey topic. One thing I found most common about the Journey topic is that many photographers go on road trips and journeys away from where they usually live. Therefore, during the first lesson, me and a friend decided to go on a journey to the forest to capture the theme of the topic. Firstly, I wanted to take images in the style of photographer Ben Gould, where the camera was placed in a position that you could see both the rear view mirror and the front of the car - however, as I was driving this was not practical and therefore I couldn't do this. Instead, I decided to start taking images when we arrived at the forest.
One of the most challenging aspects of visiting the forest, was deciding what I was going to take images of. I was unsure of whether to take images of the Journey to the forest, signs of a Journey in the forest or a literal journey taking place which I could photograph. As a starting point, I decided to place a person in the scene and use someone walking in the forest. I walked behind them and followed them, taking images of them walking through the forest. The reason I did this was because it enabled me to start the project by directly following the theme of a Journey, however I didn't like the way my images came about as such. One of my favourite images from this shoot was the following of Josh walking through the forest. The reason this is one of my favourite images is due to the way it conforms to the theme of a Journey. There is a slight motion blur occurring in the image, which shows the theme of movement and therefore relates to the nature of the topic. I changed the colours in this image on photoshop by editing them so that they were more vibrant, as many rural images I had studied featured very colourful surroundings.
Progression
In the future, I aim to take more images in the style of Landscape, and go on journeys to different locations. I want to go to Brighton, and take images of the different cultures which come from the diverse city, and also take images in the style of my photographer research Jacob James.
